[1] The second part of this section lists the Distinguished Name of the New Issuing Authority. The New Issuing Authority is the new CA that you create. There are several common attributes that may be required or optional subject to your preferred choice and regulatory requirements:
The Email Address (E) attribute is optional and may represent a valid RFC822 email address, which can be used by certificate subscribers, associated parties, other third parties and legal bodies for S/MIME based communication with the organisation maintaining the CA infrastructure.
The Organizational Name (O) attribute must be an Organizational Name. This attribute is your own or your customer’s full and complete company name as registered within applicable national authorities.
The Organizational Unit (OU) attribute must be an Organizational Unit Name, to which the CA maintenance has been assigned to.
A second OU attribute may be defined and can refer to a Repository Location, where usually all legal documentation, such as Certificate Practice Statement [2] and CP are stored, and is available to the public community.
The Common Name (CN) attribute is the nickname for your or your customer’s new CA. For example, it could be ACME Individual Subscriber CA.
The Locality Name (L) attribute is optional and represents the City or Town, where your own or your customer’s company is located in. The value of this attribute – if provided – must match the information provided to the appropriate national authorities at the time of the company registration.
The State or Province attribute (S) is also optional and represents the State or Province or other name of a recognized area, where your or your customer’s company is located in. The value of this attribute – if provided – must match the information provided to the appropriate national authorities at the time of the company registration.
The country name (C) attribute should be chosen from a list of registered country names, with associated country codes, as defined by the ISO 3166 standard and should represent the country in which your or your customer’s company is registered and operates in.
Section IV – Certificate Format & Extensions
This section specifies the extensions included in the certificate, that define how it is used and also points to the correct CPS that the new Certificate complies with.
Important Note: The CPS for the CA must include a description of how the CAs are created and formatted.
